What material is best?
Pipe fittings can be made in many different materials. Some materials are better for some functions than others:
Copper: It can withstand very high temperatures. Always used for the final connections made to boilers or furnaces for central heating.
PVC & ABS: They are light and non-toxic. They have more functions than copper therefore when water freezes and expands in the piping there is little chance of it bursting.
Stainless Steel: Often used for aesthetic reasons where plumbing is exposed. More corrosion resistant than copper but more rigid.
Iron: Malleable (ductile) iron is a good choice in industry because it is stronger than copper and plastic but rarely used in domestic installations.
PEX: Cross-linked high-density polyethy; PEX is ductile and tough and works well in very low temperatures. When installing, be aware that it can expand drastically and it needs to be shielded when used outdoors because it is susceptible to UV.

Pipe cross, also known as four-way fittings, have one inlet and three outlets and often feature solvent-welded socket, or female-threaded ends. The ends are positioned at 90-degree angles and the threads are designed to create a stable grip and secure connection to male pipe fittings. 4-way cross pipe fittings are used to connect pipes and change or control flow through a piping system. Cross pipe fittings may stress pipes as temperatures change due to their four-way nature. Because of this, pipe crosses are generally not used as plumbing hydraulic components. Instead, cross pipe fittings are more beneficial in situations where thermal expansion is not an issue, such as fire sprinkler systems and pneumatic applications.
